PETERBOROUGH LETTER: MAJOR SHIFT IN HOW READING IS TAUGHT

Contrary to what the Doug Ford government would like us to believe, we do not have underperforming schools in Ontario. What we have are chronically underfunded schools and a government that refuses to take responsibility.

The province’s recent announcement to hire 700 literacy specialists for 4,900 schools across Ontario will not improve literacy skills. Rushing to implement an overhauled Language curriculum this September will not improve reading and writing. Neither will the government’s fixation on more screening instead of investing in proven interventions and supports that will improve student learning.
