TDSB TRUSTEES APPROVE 2023-24 BUDGET BUT CALL ON PROVINCE FOR MORE MONEY

Trustees at Toronto’s public school board approved a $3.4 billion operating budget for next year at a board meeting Thursday, with many of them taking aim at the province for underfunding them.

“In developing next year’s budget, every effort has been made to limit the impact of reductions on students and ensure that all available resources are put toward supporting our classrooms and schools,” said Colleen Russell-Rawlins, director of education at the Toronto District School Board.

“In cases where ministry funding is not sufficient to meet the needs of students, next year’s budget allocates additional resources where they are needed most,” she said in a media statement.

At the start of the meeting, Russell-Rawlins said the staff’s proposed budget maintains funding commitments to key areas such as student safety, mental health supports, early literacy and mathematics.
