British Columbia’s experiment with increasing class sizes “harmed student learning, cost the government political support, and did not end up saving much (if any) money in the long run,” says a Canada Graduate Scholar in educational policy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
In an opinion article in the Toronto Star, Sachin Maharaj says principals and school administrators agreed with the BC Teachers’ Federation that increasing class sizes would “harm student learning” after a few years’ experience with larger classes.
An opinion poll taken several years after class-size caps were lifted showed more than 80% of British Columbians wanted the policy scrapped.
