‘A DISMANTLING OF DEMOCRACY IN REAL TIME’: CRITICS CALL FOR WITHDRAWAL OF EDUCATION BILL 33

Education workers and critics are calling on the provincial Conservatives to withdraw Bill 33, Ontario’s Supporting Children and Students Act.

The bill, currently in its second reading, would give the government the ability to remove elected school board trustees and install provincial supervisors in their place if it is deemed “in the public interest.” Other concerns include placing mandatory school resource officers in school.

“This is dangerously close to authoritarian control,” said David Mastin, president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), and former president of ETFO Durham Local, during a news conference at Queen’s Park on Tuesday. “We are seeing a dismantling of democracy in real time.”
