Over the Labour Day long weekend, contracts expired for the five major unions – ETFO, OSSTF, OECTA, AEFO and CUPE — representing the province’s teachers and education workers.
While talks between most of the unions, school board bargaining agencies and the government are continuing, they’re taking place in the way of cuts to education that have resulted in the loss of secondary teaching positions, educational assistants, caretaking jobs and other education workers.
At this point, no education sector union is in a legal strike position. However, CUPE is currently holding strike votes across the province and expects a strong mandate in favour of strike action from its members.
CUPE said the Ford government’s cuts to teaching positions and increases to classroom sizes have made the environment very difficult for talks toward a new contract.
