BENEFITS OF FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN ARE CLEAR: HAMILTON SCHOOL BOARD CHAIRS

Premier Doug Ford and Education Minister Lisa Thompson alarmed teachers and parents by refusing to commit to the continuation of full-day kindergarten beyond the 2019–2020 school year. But the program has shown its worth, the chair of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board told the Hamilton Spectator.

“It proved its value right away, in terms of student achievement,” said board chair Alex Johnstone.

Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board chair Pat Daly echoed the sentiment, adding that the full-day program has been “extremely positive,” especially for children from disadvantaged families.

Daly cautioned the province that a decision on kindergarten shouldn’t be taken lightly. “Decisions like that should be based on data,” he said. “In some ways it could end up supporting that the current model is the most beneficial.”
